A Band of Brothers work with young men involved in the criminal justice system, providing support for the transition to an adulthood free of crime, and full of connection, purpose and meaning. The Quest Programme brings young men and adult role models together in an intensive contemporary rites-of-passage experience and an accredited mentoring programme which has seen 82% reduction in the severity of offending behavior after the programme.
The young men have often experienced or witnessed domestic violence. They may have been abused or else kept someone else’s abuse a secret. They may have experienced neglect. They may have grown up where drug and alcohol abuse is commonplace and where positive adult role models are in short supply. A band of brothers links adult male role models with these young men, providing all with experiences that both challenge and support growth, providing a lasting community of support.
We’ll be speaking to Thurstan Crockett, SW Coordinator.
Thurstan helped set up abandofbrothers in Cornwall six years ago and has gone on to mentor 50+ young men and recruit 50 older men as mentors, modelling healthy, mature masculinity. Recently appointed as a Community Mentor in the South West, Thurstan’s ABOB role is now to help set up new geographical communities of men to expand this work. He also leads the rites of passage weekends for the young men, trains their mentors and is a qualified Trauma and Mental Health Informed Schools Practitioner.
